SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO (June 21, 2024) The Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust (PRSTRT) welcomed Dr. Vijay Chandru, a distinguished academic, entrepreneur, and biotechnology pioneer, as a keynote speaker at the Forward Center. This new 30,000-square-foot facility, home to Smartweave, is dedicated to advancing scientific and technological progress. 

The event explored the transformative potential of merging 21st-century digital tools in research and medicine. Chandru, an executive consultant for Smartweave and a leading voice in the convergence of technology and healthcare, shared his expertise in AI, genomics, and medical device development, aligning with Smartweave's mission to personalize implant design. His address coincided with the grand opening of Smartweave's cutting-edge lab, poised to revolutionize personalized healthcare solutions.

His visit to Puerto Rico served as a pivotal moment, fostering collaboration and igniting a shared vision for a future where personalized medicine transforms lives worldwide. "Facilitating and fostering conversations around research and innovation is part of the Trust's mission," said Eng. Lucy Crespo, CEO of PRSTRT. "Providing the opportunity to listen to an expert like Dr. Chandru aligns with our vision for Puerto Rico to become a globally recognized center of innovation."

Chandru shared insights on integrating advanced technologies like generative AI, next-generation genomics, and quantum computing, resonating with the Puerto Rican scientific community. "We are living through a once-in-a-lifetime shift in bioscience, enabled by the groundbreaking advancements in biotechnology," echoed Smartweave CEO Raj Malhotra. "Our vision is to harness these advancements to invent platforms and companies that create lifelong change."

Malhotra pointed to the broader implications of these advancements, citing the projection by consulting firms like McKinsey that generative AI could deliver almost $100 billion in annual value for the pharmaceutical industry in the near future. "This is just the start," he noted, expressing confidence that Puerto Rico can become a significant player in the global tech and medical fields. 

He also highlighted the strategic importance of Puerto Rico in this vision, praising its talent and experience in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). "Puerto Rico has tremendous talent, tremendous energy," he said, envisioning a bioconvergence corridor between Puerto Rico and Bangalore that could serve as a powerhouse for technological and medical innovation. Malhotra concluded with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the many individuals and teams who have supported Smartweave's mission, encapsulating the collaborative spirit essential for such groundbreaking work.
